Surveying Certificate


The certificate for Surveying prepares the student for a variety of opportunities in the surveying industry.  The School of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathmatics (STEM) has packaged the courses listed below to provide the educational background needed for a successful career in surveying and related fields.  The Surveying certificate will provide the student with a basic understanding of surveying technologies, as well as provide an educational background on the legal requirements of boundary surveying.  Students who are completing the Associate of Science in Civil Engineering Technology at Bluefield State University will gain additional surveying courses needed to satisfy the 30 hours of surveying related coursework to meet the West Virginia educational requirements for licensure as a Professional Surveyor.  (See the West Virginia Board of Professional Surveyors website for specific requirements, including required work experience)

 

The objectives within the certificate curriculum may include, but are not limited to:

• Proficiency with modern surveying equipment

• Ability to perform precise measurements

• Perform topographic surveys and volumetric calculations

• Develop an understanding of mapping and projection systems

• Determine precise locations on the surface of the earth

• Utilize computer software to perform survey calculations and mapping

• Develop an understanding of boundary evidence and legal principles

• Application of surveying and legal principles to determine boundary locations

• Ability to understand and write effective legal descriptions
