Bluefield State University’s Bachelor of Computer Science with a concentration in Software Engineering presents the core principles of the science of computing, with emphasis on developing and managing software systems. Our various theory and application courses are designed to equip our graduates with the skills needed for careers in industry, government, academia, and research. Career opportunities for our graduates include, but are not limited to, areas in computer programming, software development, computer systems analysis, database management, applications development, web development, and information technology (IT).

The program incorporates the criteria of the CAC (Computing Accreditation Commission) of ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology), for Computer Science and similarly named computing programs, http://www.abet.org.

5. Graduates possess the ability to pursue graduate level education in the field of computer science.

Student Outcomes

The Computer Science program publishes the following student outcomes to describe what students are expected to know and do at the time of graduation. These relate to knowledge, skills, and behaviors that students acquire in the program.

1. Analyze a complex computing problem and to apply principles of computing and other relevant disciplines to identify solutions.

2. Design, implement, and evaluate a computing-based solution to meet a given set of computing requirements in the context of the program’s discipline.

3. Communicate effectively in a variety of professional contexts.

4. Recognize professional responsibilities and make informed judgments in computing practice based on legal and ethical principles.

5. Function effectively as a member or leader of a team engaged in activities appropriate to the software engineering discipline.

6. Apply computer science theory and software development fundamentals to produce computing-based solutions.

7. Use current techniques, skills, and tools necessary for computing practice.

8. Apply mathematical foundations, algorithmic principles, and computer science theory in the modeling and design of computer-based systems demonstrating comprehension of the tradeoffs involved.

9. Apply design and development principles in the construction of software systems and varying complexity.

10. Demonstrate competency in communication, planning, analysis, design, construction, and deployment of software systems.
