ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Admission to Teacher Education is attained when ALL of the following are met: (Please refer to the Teacher Education Handbook for Checklist)

1. The student has met specific criteria set forth by the WVDE Licensure Testing Directory.

2. The student has completed a minimum of twenty-four (24) semester hours with a grade point average of 2.75 or higher.

3. The student has successfully completed Education 110: Foundations of Education including the 20-hour field experience with a favorable evaluation.  

4. The student has submitted to the Department of Teacher Education three (3) completed reference Checklists for Admission (see Appendix: Faculty Evaluation of Student in the Handbook) from full-time faculty members.  (Two from professional education faculty and one from content area faculty).

5. Prospective candidates are required to perform 40 hours of volunteer service with school age children or youth with at least 10 of these in a school setting (see Appendix: Volunteer Hours in the Handbook).  This volunteer service must be completed as a requirement for Admission to Teacher Education.  For the remaining 30 hours the candidate proposes the type of volunteer service he/she will complete and, if they have a preference, the site at which the remaining hours will take place.  All placements must have prior approval from a faculty member of the Department of Teacher Education.   A dispositional form with signed time logs is completed for volunteer service.  An evaluation of each service is completed by the responsible person at the service site. All 40 hours can be completed in a K-6 setting.

6. The student has completed the formal Application for Admission to Teacher Education (see Appendix: Application for Admission to Teacher Education in the Handbook) and has submitted the application to the Director of Teacher Education.  

7. The candidate has been interviewed and accepted by Education Faculty.  (The Interview will not be scheduled without meeting the aforementioned requirements!)

Interview Protocol:  Professional behavior, dress, and appearance as well as promptness are expected.  You will be asked a series of questions based on your beliefs and knowledge of education. You should also be prepared to answer questions relating to your teaching philosophy and research paper.

8. Suggested cut-off dates for Admission to the Teacher Education Program: 

• August 1st for the fall semester 

• December 1st for the spring semester. 

Students must submit their applications for admission to Teacher Education in order for an interview to be scheduled. The Director may consider late applicants if items 1-6 are met prior to the beginning of classes of each semester.

Only Education 110, 120, 160, 200, 280, 321, 333; PHED 334; SPED 310, 311; and READ 270 of the Professional Education sequence may be taken before admission to Teacher Education.

 

Requirements for Bachelor of Science Degree Elementary Education


The course of study for the Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education with a concentration in Middle Education is divided into three areas - General Studies, Professional Education, and Elementary Education, with option of a 5-9 specialization or Endorsement in K-6 Special Education. Candidates for this degree must earn a minimum of 120 semester hours of credit in approved subjects with an overall grade point average of 2.75 or better.

The following list of courses will satisfy the requirements for both the General Studies and the Elementary Education programs:

All Professional Education Courses must be completed with a grade of “C” or better.
** Restricted to students admitted to the Teacher Education Program and must be completed with a grade of “C” or better. Early/Middle degree students may select at least one additional middle school endorsement from the following:
All courses for a student’s 5-9 courses content area must be completed with a “C” or better.

Alternative Certification Courses


The state of West Virginia is experiencing a major teacher shortage. This courses will provide teacher candidates with mentoring and preparation necessary to developing individuals who are ready for certification and full-time practice as a classroom teacher.  These course offerings will also help BSU remain competitive in the field of alternative certification programs.
