MUSC 230 - Music Theory I Lecture Hour(s): 3 Lab Hour(s): 0 Credit Hour(s): 3
In Music Theory, students will implement higher-level musical language and grammar skills including musical notation, harmonic analysis, and part writing which will lead to a thorough understanding of music composition and music theory. Students will obtain and practice ear training skills and skills required for sight reading musical literature. They will recognize the development of music from an historical and cultural perspective and extend musical awareness beyond music currently familiar to the student. Topics to be covered will include pitch, pitch class, the basics of rhythm, intervals, triads, seventh chords, two-voice counterpoint, scales, and notation and scoring. Students will also be introduced to technologies used in the study of music theory. Comparisons between music of the western classical tradition and non-western civilizations or non-classical traditions will be drawn when appropriate. A progressive program for developing aural, sight-reading, and keyboard skills will be initiated.
A letter grade of at least a C must be gained for Music Minors.
