Civil Engineering Technology, A.S.

Students will be provided with knowledge and skills immediately useful to contractors, consulting engineers, surveyors, architects, industrial firms, utilities, and certain government agencies. Employment opportunities open to graduates include structural design, construction materials analysis, surveying (construction, land, mining and control), and assisting civil engineers in the analysis, design, and construction of other facilities. The associate and baccalaureate degree programs in civil engineering technology are accredited by the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org.

Admissions Requirement


Pre-Professional Program Checklist
For a student to enter a professional program he/she must
Complete ENGL 101, MATH (MATH101/109 or GNET 115), and Technical Literacy (COSC 102, BUSN 130 or MEET 111/112).
Complete at least 12 hours with a “C” or better in all courses at Bluefield State University and/or from transferring Institutions.
GPA of 2.5 or above
Have a letter of recommendation from a high school/university counselor, a faculty member, or employer. 
Complete a Statement of Purpose, to include
   Why the student chose Bluefield State University to pursue their degree.
   Why the student wants to enter this program, and what they plan to do with this degree.
   What/who influenced the student’s decision.
   Examples of how the student volunteers in their community, and what has motivated them to do so. 

 

The Civil Engineering Technology program publishes the following program educational objectives as broad statements describing expected accomplishments of its graduates during the first few years after graduation.

Program Educational Objectives


1. Graduates make significant contributions to the engineering technology profession to their employers and communities.

2. Graduates function effectively on professional teams and communicate with speaking, writing, and graphical skills.

3. Graduates respect professional, ethical, and social issues as well as a commitment to quality and dependability.

4. Graduates remain current professionally through the attendance of training, seminars, conferences, etc.

5. Students are capable of going on to the B.S. program.

The Civil Engineering Technology program publishes the following program outcomes to describe what students are expected to know and do at the time of graduation. These relate to knowledge, skills, and behaviors that students acquire in the program.

Student Outcomes


1. Students demonstrate an ability to apply knowledge, techniques, skills and modern tools of mathematics, science, engineering, and technology to solve well-defined engineering problems appropriate to the discipline.

2. Students demonstrate an ability to design solutions for well-defined technical problems and assist with the engineering design of systems, components, or processes appropriate to the discipline.

3. Students demonstrate an ability to apply written, oral, and graphical communication in well-defined technical and non-technical environments; and an ability to identify and use appropriate technical literature.

4. Students demonstrate an ability to conduct standard tests, measurements, and experiments and to analyze and interpret the results.

5. Students demonstrate an ability to function effectively as a member of a technical team.
