This course examines the legal and ethical frameworks that shape the field of public relations and broader mass communications. Students explore key topics, including First Amendment rights, defamation, privacy laws, intellectual property, and regulatory guidelines affecting PR practices. Emphasis is placed on ethical decision-making, understanding the responsibilities of PR professionals, and analyzing case studies where legal and ethical considerations intersect. Through class discussions, case analyses, and application of industry codes of ethics, students will learn to navigate complex legal landscapes and uphold professional integrity in public relations. This course will involve Service-Learning gaining workplace experience. (Each COMM course will include Service-Learning and students will serve as a reporter/editor of the Breaking Blues, an online department newspaper).
